You've heard the stories. You've seen websites with pictures of ten thousand dollar checks on them. So, you decided to take a plunge and see if you can get a slice of that ever-growing Internet marketing pie. But you don't exactly know where to start and whose advice to take seriously.
There are millions of websites out there who promise to show you the way for a small fee of - however much they can get away with. Their sales page is carefully laid out with that perfect vacation theme - you know, the Caribbean beach with a bamboo gazebo and palm trees swaying in the breeze. Something deep inside tells you it's probably another rip off. And chances are it probably is. Tread cautiously in the Internets "make money" waters.
Some of the tips I can give you from experience:
• Beware of anything quick and easy. One of the biggest myths online is you can get filthy rich with minimum amount of work fast. It's a popular fantasy and con artists have been capitalizing on this for decades. Use your common sense - anything worthwhile will never be quick and easy.
• Question everything! Just because the sales page says something, it doesn't always mean it's true. Realize that people have done way worse things for money. Investigate the validity of every claim. Read as many reviews as you can find before you part with your money.
So where do you begin and what do you do first?
The top of my list and of the most important places to start would be to - learn basic copywriting skills. Most ebooks will not tell you this, but this is a big one. As an Internet marketer you're going to need it every day. There are some great copywriting resources online you can check out that can point you in the right direction.
If writing is something you absolutely despise, you might want to reconsider getting into Internet marketing in the first place.
Find something you're passionate about or know more than an average person
I find it's easier to start with something you at least know a little bit about or personally enjoy. Say if you have some experience with animals, you might want to start with pet training or pet products. If you've been playing golf and think you have some tips you can share with people from experience, by all means start with that.
If you want to get anywhere, stick with it
No matter how tempted you might be to switch to something else when things don't go your way in the first few weeks or months. And believe me, everyday there will be something new and exciting to distract you and cloud your focus. Don't let it.
One of the biggest challenges in Internet marketing is staying consistent and true to your original plan. And one of the biggest reasons newbie marketers fail to make any money is because they jump from one area to the next - thinking it's going to be much easier with something else.
The reality is, no matter what niche you jump into, it's going to take about the same amount of research, patience and outworking your competition.
Take constant action and don't be afraid to fail
This may sound a bit cliché, but this is what separates marketers who make money, from marketers who fantasize about making money. I'm willing to bet that any Internet marketer who's ever made it big has failed in the past - and failed a lot.
Learn the basics, master them, take continuous action and I guarantee you'll be rewarded handsomely if you stick with it.
